2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR 722S MCLAREN EDITION
2009 SLR 722S McLaren Edition - 1 of 1, ultra rare, Investment Grade Collectible
The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is a grand tourer jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive, built in Portsmouth and the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England and sold from 2003 to 2010.
SLR is an abbreviation for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" (Sport Light Racing), an homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR which served as the car's inspiration. The car was offered in coupé, roadster and a limited edition speedster variants.
At the 1999 North American International Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz presented their Vision SLR concept, inspired both by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé of 1955,which was a modified Mercedes-Benz W196S race car, and the design of closed-wheel Formula One cars, a field in which Mercedes had prior experience, providing engines for McLaren bodies, as Mercedes-Benz were already designing and developing powertrains and electronics for McLaren's Formula One Team.
The production version of the car was unveiled to the general public on 17 November 2003.
A new version was introduced in 2006, called the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition. The "722" refers to the victory by Stirling Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722 (indicating a start time of 7:22 a.m.) at the Mille Miglia in 1955.
The "722 Edition" includes an engine rated at 640 Horse Power versus 617 and 600 lb⋅ft of torque versus 575,19-inch light-alloy wheels were used to reduce unsprung mass, while modifications were also made to the suspension, with a stiffer damper setup and 10 mm lower ride height introduced for improved handling. Larger 15 in diameter front brakes and a revised front air dam and rear diffuser were fitted.
Other exterior changes include red "722" badging, harking back to the original 722 racer, and black tinted tail lights and headlamps. The interior features carbon fiber trim and black leather along with alcantara bits.
The Roadster variant of the 722 Edition called the 722S was unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. It can accelerate from 0-62 MPH from standstill in 3.1 seconds and has top speed of 208 MPH. The model went on sale in January 2009 and production was limited to 150 units.
In December 2010, more than a year after the SLR was officially discontinued, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) announced a bespoke program for the SLR. The McLaren Edition is based on all variants of the SLR with the exclusion of Stirling Moss. The personalization cost GB£150,000 and was offered for only 25 cars.
Of the 25 slots, only 6 722S McLaren Edition Roadsters were constructed. These boasted a different body kit, one that was inspired by the race-ready 722GT, weighed 50 kilos less, and provided increased downforce, as well as an upgraded suspension over the “standard” SLR McLarens.
This car is the ONLY example featuring a number of mechanical and cosmetic improvements completed by McLaren, including a one-off, two-tone McLaren Orange Livery and black paint job. Under the hood, McLaren added an extra 100 horsepower by upgrading the engine management software, upgraded intercoolers, and a McLaren sports exhaust. This would be the only McLaren Edition car to receive those particular engine upgrades, and it is estimated to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 2.9 seconds!
Numerous carbon fiber parts were added, including new front fenders, a deck lid with an adjustable wing, side-view mirrors, a front spoiler, hood slats, new front fenders, and a underbody with an upgraded rear diffuser. Keeping the car's new color scheme in mind, the brake calipers were painted McLaren Orange and the tailpipes were painted black. The interior received several updates as well, including carbon fiber doorsills, headrests embroidered with McLaren logos, reupholstered seats and door panels in diamond-patterned black alcantara, McLaren Orange-painted seat frames and some interior trim, new McLaren Orange seat belts, and orange stitching. The upgrades are fully documented by paperwork and receipts from McLaren, and the car is accompanied by all of its original books, spare key, and a factory car cover.
While one hundred fifty SLR 722S Roadsters were made, only twenty-five were destined for the United States. From those cars, only six McLaren Editions were produced and five would remain in Europe, leaving this as not just the sole U.S.-specification SLR 722 McLaren Edition Roadster but also the only one to receive such a plethora of upgrades. This SLR McLaren 722S Roadster is a true factory one-off and undoubtedly the most unique example of its kind.
